Forty Steps - Kirk Stairs
Record of the name Kırk Merdiven backs to the visit of the famous traveler EvliyaÇelebi who came to Kaleici in 1671-72. Due to an intense trade between Egypt and Antalya, with the importance of the port it is thought that the staircase of 44 stone steps which provides one of the major routes between the port-marina and Kaleiçi, was built by Venetians who occupied and destroyed the city in the 15th century. These steps of stairs in the middle point of themarina, extend along below the city walls which enclose the northern part of the acropolis of the settlement. It is known that until the Late Ottoman Period, a monumental gate which provided access to Kaleiçistood at the top of these steps, but there is unfortunately no trace of this gate today. This door is described by EvliyaÇelebi as the door of Grand Harbor and he also cites that over this door "a frenkpesend dervish" was depicted. This description, should belong to a winged angel figure that is carved on an Early Byzantine Greek relief with Gabriel named, in the Antalya Museum today,a relief of Gabriel that holds in his right hand a medallion in which is written in Arabic letters "God". Presumably, these reliefs belonged to the ambo of Panhagia Church (KesikMinare) which was the largest structure of the city in Christian Period. And there is.
